Challenge

After Congress passed a bill that would cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, Caring Across Generations wanted to elevate real voices of those most affected by the cuts. The organization needed a way to move the conversation beyond numbers on a page and highlight the human cost of these cuts. That meant quickly gathering powerful stories from across the country, amplifying them at scale, and ensuring elected officials were held accountable for their disastrous decision that affected more than 80 million Americans.
We generated some really incredible and powerful stories from this campaign, thanks to our partnership with Soapboxx!

Solution

To meet this challenge, Caring Across Generations organized a 60-hour Protect Medicaid Vigil on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., a powerful event designed to put the real impact of the Medicaid cuts front and center. Using Soapboxx, Caring Across Generations collected videos from caregivers, older adults, people with disabilities, and families directly affected by the decision Congress had made. With Soapboxx’s fundraising feature, QR codes and custom calls to action were automatically added to each video, directing viewers to take action by signing a form to hold their elected officials accountable. Additionally, Caring Across launched a photo prompt with a “Protect Medicaid” frame, giving supporters a simple, visual way to show their solidarity. Both videos and photos were showcased throughout the vigil and online, ensuring that the stories of those most impacted could not be ignored.

Result

The integration of QR codes within the videos extended the reach of the vigil far beyond the National Mall, generating over 2,500 scans that drove supporters to the Protect Medicaid website, where they could watch additional stories and take action. Supporters submitted over 1,370 “Hold Congress Accountable” forms between July 20th and 27th. Additionally, the photo prompt served as a unifying tool across social media, enabling community members nationwide to visibly stand in solidarity and raise awareness. Through this multi-layered approach, Caring Across Generations effectively elevated the collective voices of those most at risk, turning individual stories into a powerful movement for accountability. Just days later, Congress introduced legislation to repeal the Medicaid cuts, a clear sign of how authentic storytelling can cause meaningful change.
We had an opportunity to showcase stories directly on the front steps of Congress, and Soapboxx gave us a platform to source stories from people around the country.

Why were real stories so important for this event?

In the fight to protect Medicaid, we were up against an argument that was just numbers and line items in a budget. Stories helped us showcase what those numbers meant in the day-to-day of people’s lives. Billions of dollars in cuts is not just a number – it’s someone losing their home, their care attendant, their dignity, and agency. Stories also helped us show the broad swath of people who would be impacted by cuts – people across the country, across income levels, whether they’re a caregiver or care recipient themselves.

What made Soapboxx the right tool for collecting and sharing stories during the Medicaid Vigil, and what challenges did it help you overcome?

We had an opportunity to showcase stories directly on the front steps of Congress, and Soapboxx gave us a platform to source stories from people around the country. Also, Soapboxx has the benefit of people being able to record their stories from their own homes and communities – we know it’s not always easy for caregivers or care recipients to make the time themselves.

How many “Hold Congress Accountable” forms were sent during the vigil?

In total, 1,370 forms were sent over the course of the week of July 20-27.
